Too Many Snow Days?

Image result for snow

Even though the temperatures have been mild lately, there are still many snow storms! Many people like snow because it looks beautiful when it falls from the sky, and it can be fun to play in, but the thousands of people who commute to work do not like it! Due to the storms, there are many school closings, or “snow days.” School administrators decide to close school when the roads will be too unsafe to travel on, and it will be difficult for students and staff to arrive safely. Students rejoice when they hear they have a snow day, and some teachers do, too! Even though this can be a good thing, there are consequences to having snow days. When the school uses too many snow days, there is no choice but to make up the days. In my school district, if there is one more snow day, we will lose one day from our spring break! No one wants that! Because of that bad consequence, I hope there are no more snow days this school year.

Vocabulary

mild - not extremely cold or extremely warm
commute - travel to work

Activity

Complete the Crossword Puzzle.

Grammar Point - THERE IS/THERE ARE

The phrases "there is" and "there are" are used to show or reference something that exists. In my post, I mentioned "there are many snow storms" and "there is no choice." Notice that these two are used for two reasons. "There is" is used with a singular subject and "there are" is used with a plural subject.

Create two sentences that feature "there is" and two sentences that feature "there are."

  1. I definitely agree! As a teacher, although we really enjoy snow days and having some time off we will have vacation dates taken away from us. Your topic is very clear and the vocabulary is easy for the students to understand.

  2. Snow days are both great and problematic. No one wants to lose a vacation day.
Your grammar point is very good and such an important point for ESL students.
